Cumberland historic county, extreme northwestern England, bounded on the north by Scotland, on the east by the historic counties of Northumberland and Durham, and on the south by the historic counties of Westmorland and Lancashire. Cumberland is presently part of the administrative county of Cumbria. Nestle, famous most of all for chocolate, has a factory on the outskirts of Carlisle very close to Cumberland.
