Great St. Mary's has a tower with panoramic views of Cambridge, a gift shop and excellent brass rubbing facilities. There has been bell ringing since 1516 and the "Cambridge Quarters" were the model for the "Westminster chimes" of Big Ben which ring out today worldwide.

The Church is at the heart of the City and University, with a fascinating history including many royal patrons - Queen Elizabeth I visited and impressed a large audience of scholars by giving a Latin oration in 1564. Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery, we are developing a heritage project to highlight the significant part which the Great St Mary’s has played in the history of the University and City of Cambridge. The project aims to bring these stories alive for wider audiences, and to open up the Church as a dynamic centre where visitors, school groups and Cambridge residents can discover new facets of our historic city.

The Church is a venue for many musical and artistic events.
