Wetherby Town Hall description
Community Hall / Business Meeting Rooms / Fitness and Dance Centre / Local Authority (Town Hall etc) / Training Rooms / Wedding Venue
Medium (1-150)
Wetherby's origins are as a staging post through the centuries for travellers between London and Edinburgh. Now it has developed into a busy market town, but still retains its Thursday Market, granted by Royal Charter in 1240.
Wetherby Town Hall stands in the centre of the market square, Market Place, and dates back to 1845. It replaced the former Court House and Wetherby Prison and cost £1,300 which was paid for by public subscription.
The Town Hall has had many varied uses. It was famous as the venue for the Wetherby Statute Fairs, held every November, for the hiring of local servants on a day usually observed as a general holiday. In the inter-war years the Town Hall Dances were important social events.
Wetherby Town Hall is a registered charity and the Town Council is the Trustee. The magnificent building is located in the Market Place and dates back to 1845. Today it houses the Town Council office and has rooms which are hired out for a variety of charity and community events, various sales, as well as a weekly Antique and Collectors Fair which has been running for more than 30 years.
