YHA Eskdale description
Hotel / Conference Centre
Medium (1-150)
This tranquil hostel is set in 15 acres of private grounds nestling in the peaceful western fells, amongst a landscape of woods, rivers, rugged hills and sheep. YHA Eskdale is on the doorstep of the highest and most challenging Lakeland peaks such as Scafell but is also ideal for delightful riverside and woodland walks.
YHA Eskdale has the best of both worlds - situated on the edge of arguably the Lake District's most awe-inspiring wilderness area but with a choice of good pubs within a short walk. It's the perfect place for nature watching and the 15 acres of grounds and gardens are a haven for wildlife with red squirrels and lots of bird species.
The hostel even has its own bird hide for guests to bird spot in comfort. From the highest point on the nature trail you can see beyond the mountains to the sea. A trip on Eskdale’s L’aal Ratty steam railway or a short drive will take you out to explore the Cumbrian coast with its mixture of beaches, places of interest and cliff walks at St Bees. For those needing a cultural break from outdoor activities, Eskdale valley abounds in archaeology with stone circles, Viking crosses and the nearby Hardknot Roman fort.
YHA Eskdale is an environmentally friendly hostel and uses renewable energy. YHA and guests staying at YHA Eskdale have a reduced carbon footprint as YHA Eskdale’s heating and hot water is provided by renewable energy using biomass and a proportion of our electricity is generated by solar panels.
- Walking to suit all abilities from the ascent of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England to leisurely riverside strolls.
- Great climbing on Hare Crag (described as the Yosemite of the Lakes for its variety) behind the hostel.
- A highlight is wild swimming in the crystal clear plunge pools of the River Esk or in secluded tarns dotted on the surrounding hills.
- Excellent cycling in the area on trails out to the coast or on road over the high mountain passes. Mountain bike hire is available nearby.
YHA Eskdale has dorm beds, private rooms and camping.
