The History of The Creggans Inn
The ’famous’ Creggans Inn was established in mid 1800’s at Creggans Point, on the east shore of Loch Fyne where the steamboat linked Strachur with Inveraray.
Previous owners, Sir Fitzroy Maclean and Lady Veronica Maclean purchased Strachur Estate, including Creggans Inn, in 1957.
Fitzroy was a diplomat, politician, soldier and author. He was an original member of the SAS and Winston Churchill’s personal representative in German occupied Yugoslavia where he assisted communist Tito to organise the resistance against the Germans.
During their ownership of Creggans Inn they attracted famous guests such as Joanna Lumley, Roger Moore, Art Garfunkel, Princess Margaret, various Russians and Americans. Keith Floyd cooked as part of his Britain and Ireland series in the 80’s. Veronica was a keen cook and author of cook books and with the help of French chefs the hotel collected a lot of accolades for food.
Due to his friendship with Ian Flemming and his daring war exploits, Fitzroy is thought to have been an inspiration for the James Bond character.
Fitzroy developed the MacPhunn whisky which is available for sale from the Hotel. For more details on this whisky click here.
About The Family
The MacLellan Family are your hosts at The Creggans Inn.
Archie comes from a family with a long history of succesful hotels and restaurants, so you could say that hospitality is in his blood.
Gill’s background is in retail which she has brought to Creggans in the form of the shop at the Reception in the Inn. Here you’ll find items for sale such as Creggans homemade Marmalade alongside locally produced arts and crafts. Gill also has a great eye for design and much of the decor throughout the hotel is stamped with her unique taste and eye for pretty things.
Archie and Gill have a family of three young children; Pippa , Alice and Hamish.
The local celebrity however, is Hector our award winning Hotel of the Year Doggie, who can be found on chilly evenings curled up by one of the log fires in the Inn. An affectionate character by nature, he’s a real hit with our guests and has his own following of loyal fans on our facebook page. But it can be a solitary life as a dog with only us humans to talk to so we welcomed a new four legged member to the family, Boo, named by Gill after the character Arthur ’Boo’ Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird. A whipper snapper at 4 years younger than Hector, he was supposed to have a rough coat however the long hair never developed but our affection for him quickly did!
