Nottingham Playhouse description

Commercial Venue

Medium (1-150)

At Nottingham Playhouse we make bold and thrilling theatre. It is world-class, made in Nottingham and as diverse as our community.

Situated in Nottingham city centre, Nottingham Playhouse puts on a wide variety of drama, music, dance, comedy and of course, the legendary Nottingham Playhouse pantomime. The Playhouse can also be hired as a wedding venue for your perfect day or a conference venue for that all important meeting.

Nottingham Playhouse has been one of the United Kingdom’s leading producing theatres since its foundation in 1948. Touring work nationally and internationally, the Playhouse remains firmly rooted in its vibrant home city, where its spacious modernist building – fronted by Anish Kapoor’s Sky Mirror – is one of the region’s most popular landmarks.

Within these walls we create productions large and small: timeless classics, enthralling family shows and adventurous new commissions.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Giles Croft and Chief Executive Stephanie Sirr the Playhouse enjoys an international profile. Premiered in Nottingham, Steven Berkoff’s staging of On the Waterfront has been presented this spring at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, following successful runs in the Edinburgh Fringe and West End. At the same time The Island, a play produced as part of the Young Europe exchange programme by the Playhouse’s acclaimed Theatre-in-Education company Roundabout, has been performed at Det Norske Teatret in Oslo. The Playhouse’s UK premiere production of The Burial at Thebes, Seamus Heaney’s adaptation of Antigone, was performed at Spoleto Festival USA (South Carolina) and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas (Connecticut) as well as selling out its run at the Barbican.

Other London transfers over the past decade include Rat Pack Confidential, The Railway Children, Chicken Soup with Barley, Summer and Smoke and The Whale’s Tooth. National tours in the same period include Giles Croft’s own adaptation of Whisky Galore! and his production of All Quiet on the Western Front, as well as Tracy Beaker Gets Real, Old Big ’Ead in The Spirit of the Man, The Changeling (with English Touring Theatre) and three tours with Shared Experience: A Passage to India, War and Peace and The Caucasian Chalk Circle.
