Thank you for visiting Thetford Grammar School’s website. It is my privilege to be the 37th Headmaster of this outstanding school. Thetford Grammar School has an exceptionally long historical and cultural lineage in East Anglia. A History of Thetford Grammar School has just been published, written by a former TGS Head of History, Mr David Seymour, who makes a claim for fourteen centuries of educational provision on this site. Now in the 21st century, we are an active and dynamic, all-through, independent day school for pupils from 3½ to 18.
At Thetford Grammar School we care about the individual and we pride ourselves on our warm community spirit where our young people are happy and valued. We strive for an environment of high expectations and standards in which all our pupils are encouraged to believe in themselves, to be inquisitive, to be resilient and to show ambition both within and beyond the classroom. We know that every student needs to be developed, not just intellectually and academically, but as a whole person. Both our Preparatory and Senior Schools provide stimulating and innovative opportunities for our students to learn about their world. Our young Thetfordians are happy, safe and confident. We emphasise four core areas throughout the school: academic excellence; a commitment to sport; the promotion of a wide range of artistic and cultural pursuits; and a commitment to service and community.
At Thetford Grammar School we are mindful that our students are entering a world that is rapidly changing. Our current cohort of school pupils will probably not retire until well into their 70s; research suggests they may have as many as 14 jobs before they are 40; jobs that either do not presently exist or will be distinctly different to what we know now. This is why we try to seize every opportunity to challenge, support and encourage our pupils in developing a proactive and autonomous approach to learning, incorporating critical thinking skills, communication skills and positive and flexible attitudes that will put them in the strongest possible position to flourish in both their personal and professional lives. This is a driving force behind everything we do at Thetford Grammar School – a school with a long history of excellence and achievement in providing the very best for its pupils…and their parents.
While I firmly believe that there is much more to education than examination results, it would be naïve to suggest that these do not matter. In our increasingly competitive and changing world a replete examination portfolio can secure many future opportunities. However, happiness and success depend on much more than exam results.
