The Cellar House description

Pub / Restaurant

Medium (1-150)

Originally listed as The Two Brewers from approx. 1843, the pub obtained its current name The Cellar House by at least 1845 (though it was often still referred to as The Two Brewers). However, research suggests that it may have been known before 1842 as The Victoria following Queen Victoria’s accession to the thrown in 1837.

The pub has been through a number of local breweries including Bullards, Watney and Norwich Brewery and a whole host of landlords beginning with Miles Fish, a cordwainer who ran the pub for the first 15 years.

In 1899, its first woman licensee was convicted of supplying refreshments to a policeman on duty for which she was fined 20/- plus 7/- costs (or she risked 7 days detention!).

Now a Grade II listed building, the pub stands proudly on the old London Road – now Eaton Street – and is described as having ‘an early 19th century rendered classically proportioned façade with a slate roof, but may internally have earlier origins.’ The large garden beside the pub was once the village bowling green – hence the level of the lawn.

Since April 2013, The Cellar House has been under the direction of Victoria and Graham MacDonald. Both have spent many years in the hospitality trade and are absolutely delighted to be the current ‘custodians’ of this fabulous pub and restaurant. Victoria and Graham work with a great team including their talented Head Chef Julian Reynolds, who is supported by Sous Chef Teejay, Robert, Adey, Cameron G and Shona. The friendly bar staff include David, our Bar Manager and his ‘right hand man’ James, plus Charlie, Cathy, Kat, Luis, Rivers, Hailey and Chantelle, all of whom are here to ensure you thoroughly enjoy your experience at The Cellar House.

After extensive renovation and re-decoration both inside and out, The Cellar House’s main focus going forwards is reassuringly simple: to provide real ale, good food and fine wines. The atmosphere at The Cellar House is relaxed and family friendly, without losing focus on quality.

“Our aim is to be a bustling ‘Community Pub’ that offers great beers, regular events such as live music nights and quizzes, supports local clubs and teams, and happens to be a great place to eat”, says Victoria.

In addition to being family friendly (baby-changing facilities, a children’s menu and high-chairs are available!) The Cellar House is proud to welcome dogs with well-behaved owners.

The Cellar House was recently named National Winner of the Enterprise Inns Community Heroes Awards 2015 as well as Regional Winners of Best Bar Team in the Great British Pub Awards 2015.
