Maghull Town Hall description

Local Authority (Town Hall etc)

Medium (1-150)

Maghull is situated some 7 miles north of Liverpool City Centre (European Capital of Culture 2008) on the A59 (Northway) at the end of the M57/M58 Motorways. It sits on the routes of both the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and Merseyrail’s Northern Line to Ormskirk.

Our town has grown substantially since the Second World War as a dormitory surburb of Liverpool.Until the local government reorganisation in 1974 Maghull was part of the Rural District of West Lancashire and therefore in the County of Lancashire. In 1974 Maghull was made part of the then new Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in the County of Merseyside.

Our most famous resident was, without doubt, Frank Hornby who invented Dinky Cars, Hornby Trains and Meccano. His former house “The Hollies” in Station Road carries the first ever Blue Plaque to be unveiled outside London. Other famous Maghull residents have been, astronomer Isaac Roberts, novelist Rafael Sabatini, Lord Vesty of the Blue Star Shipping Line and theologian George Holden who also published Liverpool Tide Tables.
