Founded to occupy a niche between the institution, the commercial and the ‘alternative’, BGV maintains a unique artist-run testbed that has provided a laboratory and presentation space for contemporary art and artists since 1995.
Set up in the former Lambeth Ragged School, the annual programme consists of a range of exhibitions, residencies, talks and events as well as interventions in public space.

The Lower Space is a characterful space which occupies the place of the old enclosed 'wet day' playground of the Ragged School. It hosts the Ragged Canteen cafe but can be hired for exclusive events. It has a capacity of 150 standing / 100 seated. It can be hired on its own or in conjunction with other spaces.

The Upper Space is a beautiful high-ceilinged space with the original sloping wood floor and teacher's platform of the Ragged School. Due to the heritage of the building there is no mobility-disabled access to the space (it is reached by a stairway from the entrance lobby). The space can hold 150 standing / 100 seated.
The Arch occupies a railway arch at the back of the main building. The Arch has been adapted for use by Beaconsfield and has a level fixed floor with exposed brick walls. It's size and position make it highly suitable for wedding receptions and private parties and it has a capacity of 400 standing /350 seated. It is usually hired in conjunction with the Lower Space which houses the toilet facilities and provides access to the space.
