Black Tiles description
Pub / Restaurant
Medium (1-150)
Standing on the north side of the Ipswich-Woodbridge Road (A12) almost on the boundary of the aerodrome, a pleasant stopping place for refreshment was built during 1936 for Miss F. E. Jermyn.
When the second World war broke out in 1939 The Black Tiles became a favourite place for Troops from Martlesham Heath Airfield to come and escape the stress of war.
An American Officer wrote:
“When I think of England I shall think of tea, and all that it means, and when I think of tea, I’ll think of Black Tiles. Someday I’ll come back to England for tea at Black Tiles.”
