Wrea Head Hall - Marquee Venue description

Marquee Venue

Medium (1-150)

An elegant Yorkshire hotel set in acres of landscaped grounds, in the village of Scalby on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. This stunning Gothic mansion with uninterrupted views across the Yorkshire countryside is arguably the best of all the Scarborough Hotels and just a short drive from the Yorkshire Heritage coast. Offering first class accommodation the hotel is home to one of the best restaurants in Scarborough "1881" serving delicious contemporary British cuisine in classic surroundings. For your short break or romantic weekend Wrea Head Hall offers you a relaxed and enjoyable stay in a perfect location to explore North Yorkshire and its attractions.

Built in 1881 as a private home for the Ellis family, the mansion sits on an elevated piece of land known as Wrea Head Rigg from which the house gets its name. Now a much loved hotel, Wrea Head Hall still retains the feeling of an historic country house. You will be pleased to find that all the hotel rooms are contained within the original building. The mansion is built of honey coloured stone in the romantic Gothic style, adorned with gargoyles and a bell tower.

As you enter the Mansion through the stone porch you are greeted by the smell of polished oak panelling that is a major feature of the public rooms. On passing reception, cleverly hidden within an old courtyard and reached through a mullion window, you turn and arrive in the main hall.

The hall with its magnificent double height stained glass mullion windows and ornate plaster ceiling is the centre of all activity. Bathed in sunlight during the summer months it invites you to pull up a chair and get lost in a book, and on a cold winter’s evening the log fire in the stone fireplace and the flickering candles will warm the coldest of chills away. From the hall you ascend the grand staircase with its oak-carved lower gallery containing arches and barley twist posts. As you turn to head upwards you come face-to-face with another fantastic mullion window set above its own landing containing a window seat ideal for staring into the distance or losing yourself in thought....

The Grounds
As you pull off Barmoor Lane past the gatehouse you are transported back in time to the days when the mansion was first built. Surrounded by its original farmland the house is hidden within acres of woodland and gardens at the top of the drive. It’s not until you reach the bottom of the front lawn that you are given your first passing glimpse of the house before you disappear into the woodland once again to be greeted by the true beauty of the Hall as you emerge at the top of the drive.
The large lawn at the side of the house, with its mass of mature rhododendron bushes, stretches down to the ha-ha and across to the hotel’s private woodlands. With its far reaching views this garden is known as the "long view", and on a clear day you can see Scarborough Castle clearly silhouetted on the skyline.
Feel free to walk around the woodland and take a seat in one of the clearings to contemplate the day.

Kitchen Gardens and Greenhouses
In its heyday the mansion’s kitchen garden and greenhouses were state-of-the-art with underground boiler houses and plants from around the world. Today unfortunately they are derelict. We do have plans to restore as much as possible over time but for now they are not open to the public.

The Library
Venture back into the classics within this elegant room filled with mahogany bookcases and period furniture. With a large bay window overlooking the front lawn it’s the ideal place to find a quiet spot with a cup of tea and a good book.

Weddings
Wrea Head Hall is a very special place and ideal for your intimate or large wedding. With its many and varied photo locations it will make your day that bit more special compared to other venues. As the hotel is very popular with other guests over the weekend we have a full house policy, which means the hotel would need to be booked for a full weekend Friday & Saturday. This also enables us to give you our complete attention for your special day.
We can also transform the hotel into your own home for the two days, with family photos located around the house and other small touches that make us a little different from the rest. For larger weddings we can accommodate many different sizes and styles of marquees on our two lawns.

Events & Meetings
At Wrea Head Hall we can help you with any type of event or meeting. The Library and Rose room are ideal for an off-site business meeting, where the quiet location can help you focus on getting the deal done or just bringing your team up to speed with the latest developments. We can also help with team building events and have grounds that can accommodate most activities including paint balling in our own private woodland.
