The Club found its origins on the council green in Malpit Lane Recreation Ground where a group of bowlers played fairly regularly. They broke away to form a private club at the Ashdown Park Hotel (now demolished) which was at the southern end of Fairdene Road, where a green and room were provided by the Hotel.

Things did not go quite according to plan and they decided to start afresh. On Friday 16th November 1935 at 26 Chipstead Valley Road a meeting was called by Mr A.T.Markwick a well known local butcher, at which nine other gentlemen were present. Mr Markwick put an idea to the meeting of acquiring one and one third acres adjoining Coulsdon Court Golf Club, laying out two bowling greens and erecting a pavilion which would include accommodation for a greenkeeper and his wife.
