Regal 1&2 Cinema Wadebridge description

Commercial Venue

Medium (1-150)

Several local owners operated the cinema under its initial name of the “Cinedrome”. Unfortunately it hit hard times in the 1960’s and was on the verge of closure when the Wadebridge based construction business “WTW” (abbreviation for W.T.WILLIAMS) acquired the cinema on 30th January 1967. Coincidentally this was the day of the closure of the Wadebridge to Padstow railway line as a result of the Beeching axe. “WTW Cinemas” also operated the Capitol Theatre St Austell and the Capitol cinema Padstow at this time.

The cinema was substantially renovated by “WTW” in the late 1960’s and 1970’s and successfully entertained both local inhabitants and the thousands who flocked to the North Cornwall coast during this time.

In October 1985 work commenced to create a twin cinema which opened in May 1986, theatre one seating 220 and theatre two 90.

For the past 28 years the Regal has continued to offer cinema goers the best facilities around. Theatre one is equipped with comfortable Pullman seating and both auditoria have large screens and Theatre two has recently installed a “Master Image” 3-D system for presenting the latest 3D movies. In September 2012 the traditional 35mm film projectors were replaced by state of the art Christie digital projectors. Theatre one has 7.1 Dolby Stereo Sound, Theatre two has 5.1 Dolby Stereo.

June 2013 saw the Regal commence live satellite transmissions of theatrical shows, concerts, operas and ballet, bringing live content from around the world to North Cornwall. In particular the Royal Opera House and National Theatre have proved popular.

The Regal was selected to host the British Premiere of “Amy Foster” in May 1998 and “Saving Grace” in May 2000, both filmed in North Cornwall by major Hollywood studios. Generally most films open in Wadebridge concurrently with London West End and national release dates. A specialised arts programme runs throughout the winter months under the “Sundays @ 8.00” banner.
