University College, or Castle as it is affectionately known, is the oldest college of Durham University, founded in 1837, and located in a Norman fortress. It is a vibrant community of students and staff, undergraduates, from home and abroad (JCR), postgraduates (MCR), and members of University staff, visiting Fellows and people from the City and region (SCR), as well as College officers and staff, and former students (alumni). Durham Castle is open to the general public to visit through guided tours. It is available for wedding receptions, banquets, conferences, and bed and breakfast accommodation.
