In 1888, the board of the Crichton Royal Hospital appointed Sydney Mitchell to design a church. The initial budget was five thousand pounds and it was decided the church should be in gothic or pointed style to seat 450 people and contain a mortuary chapel. An early design showing a spire was rejected. In 1890 plans were approved and some 100 men were employed to build the church supervised by the Clerk of Works, John Davidson. The Crichton Memorial Church, completed in 1897 at six times the original budget is a magnificent cathedral style building in the gothic style. The Crichton Church sits in 100 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Dumfries.
