Alnmouth Village Golf Club, Alnwick description
Sports Club - Golf
Medium (1-150)
The growth of the North Eastern railway system in the mid-1800's killed off Alnmouth's coastal shipping trade but it encouraged wealthy families to build houses or rent holiday cottages in the village and subsequently led to the formation of the Alnmouth Golf Club in 1869, later to become Alnmouth Village Golf Club. The Village is the oldest nine-hole links course in England.
The course was designed and created by Mungo Park, a famous name in the sport, who was the club's first professional/greenkeeper. He won the Open Championship at Musselburgh in 1874.
George Rochester succeeded Mungo Park as the club's professional and in 1905 the club arranged for Mungo's nephew, Willie Park, to design and lay out an extra nine holes slightly inland and above the existing links course. The extension to 18 holes was celebrated by an exhibition match between Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor which Taylor won two-up. The Alnmouth Ladies' Golf Club was formed in 1907, although early photographs confirm that ladies had been playing on the links before that time. With the development of the adjacent golf course at Foxton, the links was returned to a 9 hole course in 1936.
New members are most welcome, an application may be found on our 'Membership Fees' page. The Village is almost unique as one of the few courses where you can utilize all of your senses, 1) see both the real beauty of the fantastic coastline views plus the ever changing, natural, undulating links; 2) hear the waves as they hit the long sandy beach; 3) smell and taste the natural salt air that wafts in with the tides; 4) feel the original, springy turf.
So if you are an individual, or a golf party looking for an enjoyable day on an historic golf course, then Alnmouth Village Golf Club look forward to giving you a very warm welcome.
