The Shooting Star description
Pub / Restaurant
Medium (1-150)
A pub with real history, The Shooting Star is a converted mansion dating back to 1896. It was designed by Barrow Emmanuel, of Davis & Emmanuel, for Anglo-Jewry’s charitable institution ‘Jewish Care’ founded in 1859. London has been home to two-thirds of the Jewish community throughout the modern period hence London has more synagogues and other Jewish buildings and sites than anywhere else in England.
In the 1830’s, not long before the pub was built, Middlesex Street was named to mark the official border between the City and the East End. It was formally and more famously known as ‘Petticote Lane’ - where master weavers and traders met to exchange goods and cloth during the late 1500’s and early 1600’s. Clothing markets still operate there on Sundays.
