Mellerstain House description
Commercial Venue
Medium (1-150)
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the same can be said of Mellerstain. Begun in 1725 and finally completed in 1778, this grand stately home has a fascinating history, and is of unique architectural interest as the result of a fruitful collaboration between the Baillie family and famous architects William and Robert Adam.
Great country houses like Mellerstain reflected the new-found optimism and stability of a more enlightened and prosperous Scotland in the 18th century, and the splendid Robert Adam interiors with their classical plasterwork friezes and glowing colours, have survived the fads and fashions of successive generations, giving us a remarkably complete picture of a stately home as it would have been 240 years ago.
Mellerstain House, the grand design among Scotland’s finest stately homes, has been open to the public for over 50 years. Come and discover the story of Mellerstain for a day, and enjoy the fabulous paintings, embroidery, china and furniture collections, admire the classical perfection of Robert Adam’s architecture and interior decoration, and be inspired by the friendly atmosphere and romantic location of one of Scotland’s greatest Georgian houses.
Mellerstain House and Gardens is the perfect setting for a day out, relaxing holiday, private function or wedding, and hosts a number of events each year including our contemporary art gallery and concerts. Within the estate Mellerstain also has its own natural burials site, Hundy Mundy.
