Duke of Gordon Hotel description
Hotel / Conference Centre
Medium (1-150)
In the Heart Of The Scottish Highlands and Cairngorm National Park.
With origins in the eighteenth century the hotel was originally built as a stopover for passengers travelling by stage coach along the old A9 to Inverness and the North of Scotland. The facilities and atmosphere experienced in the hotel together with the hospitality and welcome extended by our staff make the Duke Of Gordon the ideal place to stay when visiting the Highlands.
The hotel is honoured that it is used as a base by the powerful MacPherson Clan when clan members from all over the world visit the Highlands every year for their international rally at the Duke.
The Hotel prides itself on its restaurant and excellence of cuisine. The experience of dining in the elegance of our impressive Balmoral Restaurant with its heavily corniced ceilings and Peddie murals depicting Scottish Highland history and local scenes of great natural beauty is not one easily forgotten. (How many men can you spot in the big picture?)
On the 8th October 1861 the Duke Of Gordon Hotel was honoured by a visit from Queen Victoria and her devoted consort Prince Albert. During her expedition to the Highlands Her Majesty recorded the incident in her personal diary thus: We drove along the road over several bridges…. Close below the ruined Castle of Ruthven, which we could just descry in the dusk and on a long wooden bridge over the Spey to an Inn at Kingussie, a very straggly place, with very few cottages. Already, before we arrived there, we were struck by people standing at their cottage doors, and evidently looking out, which made us believe we were expected. Grant and Brown kept them off the carriages, and gave them evasive answers, directing them to the wrong carriage, which was most amusing. One old gentleman with a high wide-awake (a type of hat) was especially inquisitive.
