Asylum description
Commercial Venue
Medium (1-150)
Asylum is an artist lead organisation based in Caroline Gardens Chapel in Peckham, London. It was founded in 2010 and is directed by artists Jo Dennis and Dido Hallett. Asylum uses the chapel as a project and exhibition space, hires it out for events and as a location for film and photography.
WEDDINGS
Asylum’s Chapel is licensed by Southwark Council for weddings and civil ceremonies. We welcome same sex partnerships.
The chapel is a grade 2 listed building built in 1826 by the Licensed Victualers Benevolent Institution for use by the residents of Caroline Gardens. These residents were made up of retired workers of the alcohol trade. Bombed in WWII, the present use of the chapel is as a flexible space which can be hired for photographic and film shoots and for exhibitions, theatre, weddings and funerals.
The grand entrance has beautiful steps leading up to a portico with columns and tomb-like tapered giant doors which are ideal for wedding photos. Situated in the middle of a large garden and lawn, with georgian alms houses surrounding the chapel it is truly a little oasis. The gardens make a beautiful and peaceful backdrop for a wedding. Inside, the beautifully distressed walls are extremely photogenic and the large hall area offers many possibilities for set-up and styling. We can dress the chapel with candles and festoon lighting and you can send your florist/ friend/wedding party before hand to dress or add to the decor, its up to you what you add! As an extra you can book an onsite coordinator who will meet with you to discuss your plans for the day. They will be on site on for the full day to make sure you day runs smoothly (more info on their role below).
The Chapel has its own natural acoustics and works well with un-amplified instruments , in the past we have had harps and string quartets for weddings which work beautifully. If you are considering amplified music this must be agreed in advance. NB Bands that use full drum kits, electric guitars and trumpets are not appropriate for the chapel. Please always check with us before booking a band.
