Relax in your down-time

If you are attending functions at the meeting rooms or conference facilities at the Heathrow hotel, there are masses of choice in terms of what to do during your down-time. Being so close to London, there is a multitude of choice either in the capital city itself, or places close to the hotel.

Just a few miles from West Drayton is the centre of the British Film Industry as the Pinewood, Shepperton and Teddington film studios are all nearby. Pinewood is a world famous venue, known as the home of James Bond and it and the other studios are where the Star Wars and Alien films, the Superman franchise and the Harry Potter movies as well as many of the other biggest Hollywood films ever made were filmed. The studios continue to be used as the location of choice for film makers from around the world for their unrivalled facilities.

There are a many charming and picturesque villages close to the hotel which offer lovely opportunities to visit and get a flavour of the area. Places such as Harmondsworth, Cowley and Iver, Great and Little Missenden. Denham is home to some of the best known faces in British TV and film, and the towns along the Thames such as Marlow, Henley and Maidenhead, Taplow and Wargrave provide beautiful settings for tranquil exploration, as well as the village of Bray which is home to Heston Blumenthal’s legendary Fat Duck pub and it’s offshoot the Riverside Brasserie, as well as the Waterside Inn which is part of the Roux gastronomic empire and the Caldisi in Campagna which boasts three Michelin stars.

Just outside Egham is Runnymede, the site where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215, sealing into law The Liberties of England and limiting the power of the monarch.

Runnymede also houses the Kennedy Memorial - the only designated US soil in Great Britain (not the US Embassy which stands on land owned by the Duke of Westminster who, when requested to sell it to the US government, agreed on condition that the United States return the land confiscated from his family after the War of Independence – or the state of Virginia as it is also known).

Also close by is Windsor with the famous castle, one of the homes of HM the Queen which is open to the public for tours, and containing marvellous parks and walking facilities.

In Uxbridge is the excellent Battle of Britain Bunker, an operations room used to direct fighter squadrons and key to the defence of London during the Blitz in the summer of 1940, and tours are available every day and in the evening by arrangement.
