Blackheath Halls description

Community Hall

Medium (1-150)

Built in 1895 by William Webster, Blackheath Halls, along with the Conservatoire of Music and the School of Art, is part of the oldest surviving purpose built cultural complex in London. It was originally used as a venue for concerts and public meetings, playing host to some of the most famous musical performers and public speakers of the early 20th century: Sir Edward Elgar, Dame Clara Butt, Sir Ernest Shakleton, George Bernard Shaw and Suffragette rallies. Commandeered by the Royal Army Pay Corps during the First World War and again taken over by the Ministry of Works in 1939. Through the support of local businesses and the community, Blackheath Halls was saved from demolition in the 1980s. Following extensive restoration, the Halls operates as a charitable trust to pursue the ethos of its Victorian founders.

Since fully reopening in 1991, Blackheath Halls has offered an unique and beautiful venue with a flexible approach. The Halls regularly holds classical concerts, rock/pop performances, folk/world events, and comedy acts, and our family performances and activities are becoming more and more popular every year. Further to our lively season of events, our varied and engaging community programme makes up a core part of what the Halls is about, giving members of the local community and beyond the opportunity to get involved with a variety of activities.

The Great Hall is a magnificent space and the ceiling provides some of the best acoustics in the United Kingdom for large scale orchestral performance, and the Halls regularly welcome world renowned orchestras and ensembles for recordings and rehearsals. Among those who choose the Great Hall as their preferred recording venue are Chandos Records, English National Opera, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the distinguished conductors Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Charles Mackerras and Richard Hickox.

The recently refurbished Recital Room is an excellent venue for chamber concerts including the popular Blackheath Sundays Recital series, rehearsals and wedding ceremonies. We are delighted to have a permanement exhibition in the Recital Room of works by the artist Oleg Prokifiev.

Blackheath Halls is a wholly owned subsidiary of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and provides a regular base for large scale student rehearsals and performances, including the annual Trinity Laban opera.
