Ellesmere Sports Club description
Sports Club - Other
Medium (1-150)
In 1886 Lord Ellesmere gave the land to be used as a public green and bore the expense of its construction. The cost of a pavilion at a later date was funded by subscription. The green was opened by Lord Mulgrave in the absence of Lord Ellesmere on August 14th 1886.
In 1889 extra land was granted and two tennis courts were opened and later enlarged in 1891. The pavilion was enlarged in 1901 but was burnt down and the present one was erected in the 1930s.
The Cricket club was founded in 1846 by the first Earl of Ellesmere, thus improving the districts facilities for his tenants. The two clubs were amalgamated in 1975 and the Ellesmere Sports Club was born.
Croquet was also introduced as a sport in the 1930s and is still played today.
The introduction of squash as a sport within the club came in 1979.
The Ellesmere Sports Club hosts two seperate rooms. The Sutherland Suite and the Members Sports Bar. Both rooms are available for hire.
MEMBERS SPORTS BAR
The members bar is a fully licensed bar which is stocked by J.W. Lees brewery. We serve the very popular J.W. Lees cask ale, along with various other pumps. Along with Carlsberg we have recently introduced a new lager - San Miguel - which is proving to be very popular with members.
The bar has a pool table and several comfy couches - perfect for catching up on the latest sports. We show all games on both Terrestrial TV, Sky and - most recently added - BT Sport. For a friendly, relaxed atmosphere come and join as a Social Member.
All people are welcome, including children - though they must be out of the bar by 9:30pm.
FUNCTION ROOM
The Sutherland Suite is a bright, airy, room which is ideal for any events you have in mind.
Our friendly and attentive staff are happy to assist you with whatever you need to make your event memorable in the best possible way.
The Manager and Caterer are able to advise you in all aspects, fom the menu to table planning, entertainment, room decoration and balloons.
The Sutherland Suite recently had an extension in the form of a lovely conservatory, which faces out onto the bowling green. This exstension means we can now accommodate parties of up to 150 guests.
Our room can be hired out for a number of occasions and events. Below are some examples of what the room can be used for:
