Built around 1760 Shotton Hall represents a fine example of a mid 18th Century Country House and is one of only a few still surviving in the area today. The land on which the Hall is built belonged to the Thompson family from the reign of Elizabeth I until the marriage of the family’s heiress Elizabeth to Charles Brandling in 1756. In 1850, following unsuccessful speculation in coal mining, the Brandlings’ were forced to sell their estates, including the Hall, to the Shotton Coal Company.
The Hall subsequently passed from the Shotton Coal Company to the Burdon family around 1880 and was later requisitioned by the War Office during the Second World War. At the end of the war, the Hall was purchased by the Horden Collieries Co. Ltd and when the Company was nationalised the Hall came into the ownership of the National Coal Board. In 1949/50 the Hall was refurbished when it became the Offices of the Peterlee Development Corporation and the external fabric was restored so far as was possible to its original condition.
In 1984, with the impending demise of Peterlee Development Corporation, the Hall was sold to Peterlee Town Council. Since then, the formal gardens have been restored and the building extended to provide excellent banqueting and conference facilities. As with all good old houses, Shotton Hall had its own ghost or poltergeist – “The Grey Lady”. Although entirely undocumented, it would appear that some unfortunate serving girl took her own life after an indiscretion with one of the masters of the Hall. And to this day, she still asserts her presence in the Hall, especially on and around the back staircase leading to the former servants’ quarters. It was on these stairs that the poor girl hung herself.

The in-house caterer has extensive experience of providing the highest quality cuisine to suit every budget. Menus can be supplied for your perusal or alternatively a consultation appointment can be made and a menu designed to your own specification, accommodating any special dietary requirements you may have.
The flexibility of the caterer allows us to accommodate parties from as little as 2 up to 350. Shotton Hall is situated just off the A19 on the outskirts of Peterlee, equidistant from Sunderland, Durham and Middlesborough, offering great transport links to neighbouring towns, cities, railway stations and international airports.

Shotton Hall is set in 17.5 acres of landscaped gardens just off the A19 on the outskirts of Peterlee. It is centrally located for the towns of Hartlepool and Durham (8 miles) and Sunderland (12 miles).
Shotton Hall has two function suites, wedding rooms and several smaller rooms, decorated and furnished in the style of the period.
Banqueting Suites
These beautifully appointed suites, the Brandling and Burdon Suites are available for wedding receptions, dinner dances, seminars, fayres, fashion shows etc. Both suites have the advantage of being served by their own entrance, restrooms, cloakrooms, bar and independent access to a lawned terrace.
The Brandlings Suite can comfortably accommodate around 150 people for a formal dinner / reception and 180 people for an evening function with dancing / entertainment.
The Burdon Suite will hold approximately 100 and 120 people respectively. These suites can be combined into one room for larger functions, accommodating up to 350 people.
Wedding Rooms
We have a number of variously sized rooms licensed for civil ceremonies/ partnerships that will provide the ideal setting, from an intimate small ceremony to a 350 person extravaganza.
All of the rooms are stylish and complimented by period style furniture.
Ancillary rooms can be made available for the bride and groom to make last minute adjustments to their outfits and to allow them the opportunity to change prior to the evening reception, if required.
Please note that Shotton Hall is an approved Premises for Civil Ceremonies only and Religious Ceremonies are not permitted.
The hirer’s attention is particularly brought to this matter, as any breach of this Regulation may lead to the revocation of the Town Council’s approval as approved premises for Civil Ceremonies.

Two elegantly appointed suites are available for conferences and seminars; social and business occasions, that can accommodate up to 350 people cinema-style.
Smaller syndicate rooms are also available for hire from as little as £10.00 per Hour.
Audio and visual equipment is available and facilities include car parking for up to 90 vehicles, disabled access, fully licensed bars and in-house catering services. Shotton Hall is well situated, just off the A19 within easy reach of Newcastle and Teesside International Airports and benefits from a good rail network from mainline stations at Durham, Darlington and Newcastle.
