Notley abbey was built as a house of Augustinian canons, dedicated to the blessed virgin and st. John the baptist in 1162.
In the early 16th Century Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey would stay at Notley on their way to Oxford. Later, Henry VIII was made the Head of the Church in England and the abbey was dissolved. In 1944 Sir Laurence Oliver and Vivien Leigh moved in. They hosted many celebrity parties and guests included Marilyn Monroe, Arthur Miller, Betty Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Sir Noel Coward, Ralph Richardson, Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich. Larry is quoted as saying:
“Of all the houses I've lived in over the years, Notley is my favorite. It was absolutely enchanting, and it enchanted me."
The grand stone barn Banqueting Hall is perfect for wedding breakfasts of between 40-190 guests. Notley Abbey is licensed for civil ceremonies both indoors and outside in the charming gardens that will take your breath away.
