The hall is located just a few minutes walk from the 555 bus route that runs from Keswick to Kendal via Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere and everywhere in-between.

History
From Burnbanks to Thirlmere
Thirlmere Recreation Hall started life at Burnbanks, as the Mission Hall for workers involved in building the Haweswater Dam. Once the work was completed in 1940, and the building no longer required, Manchester Corporation Waterworks Committee decided to give it to the people of Thirlmere “to improve the amenities and facilities for social welfare in Legburthwaite”
It was dismantled very carefully. Every piece was numbered and stored at Haweswater until it could be transported to Thirlmere in 1941. In October 1942 the building was finally finished and the grand opening was celebrated with a dance, where the locally famous Jackson Brothers Band from Thirlmere played.
Through the decades, the hall has been used for all kinds of local events. From ceilidhs to whist drives, weddings to exhibitions. It's hosted various local groups and remains the home of the Thirlmere WI. And of course, the wonderful Thirlmere Flower Show has been held at the hall, every year on the first Saturday in August since 1949.
